Although being scared of the dentist is not unheard of, did you know that about 13% of the population has some kind of dental phobia? It’s a bit of a spectrum, ranging from mildly nervous to downright terrified. For some people, their phobia is so extreme that they prefer to avoid the dentist altogether. The trouble with avoidance is that minor dental problems can progress into major ones and then getting them fixed is more invasive.
Here at Ace Dental, we would far rather that nervous patients in Camden came to see us and talked to us about their fears than they let their fear lead them down a path of decay and gum disease.
We are trained to be able to deal with nervous patients in a sympathetic manner, so if you are one of the 13%, please come in and see us. We will take the time to listen to your fears and set up a system of communication so that you can stop treatment and take a breather at any time.
As well as taking things slowly, we can also offer you a choice of sedation. Sedation is not an anaesthetic. What it does it calm you down and make you feel deeply relaxed so that you can float through treatment and not build up further trauma that might prevent you coming to the dentist again.
Inhalation sedation
This is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide that you breathe in through a small mask that we place over your nose. It will calm you right down and you will be able to really relax throughout your treatment, while at the same time remaining awake and able to communicate with us. It wears off very quickly once you stop breathing it in, and you can quickly get on with your day after you leave us.
Intravenous sedation
This gives an even deeper form of sedation and is delivered straight into your bloodstream via a needle that goes into the back of your hand. You may fall asleep with this sedation, and you will need someone to drive you home afterwards, as you will feel quite groggy for a while.
